Apple Pie

 Apple Pie

Apple pie is more than just a dessert—it's a slice of history and culture! While it’s famously associated with American tradition, the first apple pies were baked in England as early as the 14th century. Early recipes didn’t even include sugar because it was a luxury item at the time. Fun fact: Johnny Appleseed, a legendary American folk hero, played a significant role in spreading apple trees across the United States, paving the way for apple pie’s iconic status. Today, apple pie is a symbol of comfort, home, and tradition, often served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream—a combination lovingly called "à la mode."

Preparation Time:

1 hour

Difficulty:

Intermediate

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • 6-8 tablespoons ice water
  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (cubed)
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Kitchen Tools Needed:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling pin
  • Pie dish
  • Knife
  • Pastry brush

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and sugar. Add cold butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough holds together. Divide the dough into two disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  4. In another bowl, mix sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and lemon juice. Set aside.
  5. Roll out one dough disk on a floured surface and fit it into the pie dish. Trim the edges.
  6. Fill the crust with the apple mixture and dot with cubed butter.
  7. Roll out the second dough disk and place it over the filling. Seal and crimp the edges. Cut slits on top to allow steam to escape.
  8. Brush the crust with beaten egg and sprinkle with a little sugar for extra shine and crunch.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  10. Cool for at least 2 hours before serving to let the filling set.
